Keningau township jolted by tremor

KENINGAU - A mild earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale briefly shook buildings and houses in the township at 11.16am, Monday.



The incident was confirmed by the Meteorological Department through its website.



It said the tremor was detected at 11km from East Keningau.



The epicentre was located at Latitude 03.05 North and Longitude 116.3 East.



District police chief, Deputy Supt Robert Solisip @ David told the media that no reports were received in relation to the incident. He also said that he and personnel in the Keningau police station did not feel the tremor.



Meanwhile, district Fire and Rescue acting chief, Mohd Sabri Hassan said his department received a report from employees in the building of the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) about the tremor.



He said the LHDN staff asked the Fire Department to examine the safety of the building.



"We sent a rescue unit and after checking did not find any cracks in the building," he said.



Sabri advised the public not to panic and to inform the authorities of anything untoward that occuring in their area.



"People should also turn off all devices that can cause a fire," he said.
